Specifications of BMW 4 Series Coupe (G22) 420d (190 HP) MHEV xDrive Steptronic

General characteristics of BMW 4 Series Coupe (G22) 420d (190 HP) MHEV xDrive Steptronic

BMW vehicles have traditionally been the choice of driving enthusiasts, and coupe models have always had a reputation for being fun to drive - so does the 2022 4 Series live up to this from behind the wheel? In base spec, the 4 Series Coupe has a surprisingly compliant chassis and suspension setup that doesn't exactly scream sports car, and unfortunately, the steering is nearly devoid of feeling - no matter how much you experiment with the various drive modes - which greatly detracts from driver engagement. On the plus side, the car is willing to make changes in direction without feeling flustered and offers good grip when pushed hard. The softer damping is perfect for town driving and highway cruising. The M models are the way to go for those looking for a more dynamic experience. Fitted with stiffer M suspension, the M440i and M440i xDrive are arguably more fun to drive and are more responsive to steering input. We'd still consider the 4 Series Coupe to be more of a tourer than a track-day star, though.

The A5 Coupe is one of the 4 Series' closest competitors and starts off at a similar price. The 2022 A5 Coupe is exclusively available with AWD and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In comparison to the BMW, the Audi performs well but is more suited to cruising and lacks the sharpness of the 4 Series. The M440i and M440i xDrive are much more performance-focused, and the fact that the BMW comes with RWD cements it as the driver's choice here. Inside, the Audi offers similar levels of luxury and comfort but can't match the BMW's passenger and cargo space. We'd go for the BMW.

The BMW 5 Series is possibly one of the brand's most famous models. This executive vehicle has four doors and a proper trunk, so it's a far cry from the svelte two-door style of the 4 Series but still offers style, refinement, and plenty of enjoyment behind the wheel. The 5 Series is offered with the same 2.0-liter four and 3.0-liter inline-six powertrains but makes less power in both cases (248 hp and 335 hp, respectively). The 5 Series does, however, benefit from the M550i xDrive model, which puts down a massive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This makes the 5 Series a much more potent performance car. Naturally, the 5 Series offers more space, more cargo room, and is the more comfortable car to live with, but it can still entertain behind the wheel. If you need the space, get the 5 Series.
